About The Role

Location: Crawley, West Sussex
Days & Hours: Week 1: Friday 3.30pm through to Sunday 8pm.  Week 2: Saturday 9am through to Sunday 8pm.  (These shifts can be covered by more than 1 Support Worker) Shifts available during the school holidays, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 9am-3pm
Pay: Weekdays £12.50 per hour, Weekends £14.50 per hour.  NLW for sleep-ins (currently £8.91 for aged 23+)
Driver required? Essential (will need own car to get to work)
Driving Clients Car?
Yes, our clients Wheelchair Adapted Vehicle (WAV), automatic
Using Own Vehicle for work purposes?
Yes, On duty and to attend trainings
Essential Experience:
complex medical needs, PEG feeding, supporting a child through waking nights
Experience working with children with trauma and an interest in therapy
3 dogs and 2 cats
Accommodation (while on duty):
Fully adapted family home, with separate Carer's bedroom.

Tobias, born in 2009, has a great sense of humour and likes to have fun.  He is also very energetic and inquisitive and can easily adapt to change.  He is a very clever young man and likes to be supported to learn new things and work on the skills he already has.  His family are very important to him who he loves to spend time with, he loves to make jokes and enjoys messy play.  He enjoys watching TV and listening to Radio 1.

Tobias has severe 4 limb Cerebral Palsy and Myoclonic Epilepsy, with very limited functional activity in his upper limbs.  His muscle tone can vary greatly resulting in daily changes to his physical capabilities, comfort and posture.  Tobias has special seating, a standing frame and a walker.  He uses facial expressions to communicate and has a gastrostomy (PEG) feed. 

Your role will be to support Tobias with all aspects of his daily care.  He can eat very soft or pureed food and snacks that can dissolve easily.  He is hoisted for all transfers and requires medication administration especially for his seizures.  Tobias does bruise very easily but has aids to minimise the risk.  He wears AFO’s daily although sometimes cannot tolerate them.  He likes to be told what is happening before carrying out a task.

This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated person to join a dedicated home care team and develop existing skills and support this very special little girl. A truly rewarding role for someone who is able to communicate effectively and an ability to work with patience, tact, understanding, warmth and compassion.

Pay and Benefits:
£12.50 per hour Weekdays and £14.50 per hour Weekends.  NLW for sleep-ins (currently £8.91 for aged 23+)
On-going training & support provided
5.6 weeks annual leave pro rata
Free DBS check.

About You

It would be great to receive your application, if you have the following skills/behaviours:

  • Must be able to work with specialist equipment (training will be provided). A Handling Management Plan is available and is designed to reduce the risk of handling injuries, but you may be required to bend, kneel, squat, push or pull.
  • Experience with working with Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy
  • Confident and comfortable working in Tobias’ own home and sensitive to the needs and wishes of him and his family
  • Can demonstrate commitment and passion for meeting Tobias' needs
  • Can demonstrate empathy and understanding in an appropriate and professional manner
  • A team player who understands the importance of feedback to qualified members of the team
  • Can develop productive and professional relationships with others

  • Willingness to work flexibly and cover shifts, sometimes at short notice
  • A full driving licence (endorsements to be disclosed)

If you are successfully recruited, you will be employed directly by our client or their Deputy appointed by the Court of Protection.  However, ILS will manage your day-to-day employment, providing you with the support you need to carry out your role.  Working as a Carer or Support Worker for an ILS client means that you will have a dedicated Case Manager to oversee your client's care needs.
