Location:  Charlton, London SE7

Days & Hours: Fixed Term Contract for 24 months - 29 hours per week

Term-time hours: Monday & Wednesday 3pm-9pm (6 hrs) and 1x waking night 7.45pm-8am (12.25hrs) on a Thursday or Friday and 4.75hrs of Team Leader duties.

School holiday hours: Monday & Wednesday 8.45am-3pm (6.25hrs) and 1x waking night 7.45pm-8am (12.25hrs) on a Thursday or Friday to include 4.25 hrs of Team Leader duties.  These hours may be subject to change in accordance with Elijah’s needs.

Using Own Vehicle for work purposes? Desirable as beneficial when required to attend trainings. 
Essential: Experience with Staff Management, Leadership and Administration. Experience of supporting children with complex needs. Experience of working in a family home. Confident with PEG feeding, suctioning, epilepsy and administering medication.
Accommodation (while on duty): 5-bedroom family home with adaptations, carers’ suite with a bed, kitchenette and washing machine located on the top floor of the property.

Elijah, born in 2013, lives at home with his mother and sees his father and grandmother at weekends.  He enjoys watching TV, listening to music and spending time with family.

Elijah has Cerebral Palsy affecting all 4 limbs and communication difficulties. He requires close monitoring of his epilepsy. He has a gastrostomy and requires suctioning at times to manage his secretions. Due to his complexity he requires observation monitoring.  He is dependent on carers for all of his care needs, transfers and mobility and uses a wheelchair.  He requires hoisting for all transfers which requires assistance of 2 carers.

You will be joining a small care team within a family home where you will be taking direction from Elijah’s Mother/ The Case Manager to ensure that Elijah receives all the care he needs. As Team Leader you will run the care team, monitor care team competence, update care plans and ensure that Elijah receives high quality, timely care. You will manage the rota to include finding cover for any absences and be on call for any staff shortages, provide general support to the care team and lead by example. You will have extensive experience and sound leadership skills to support and develop the care team. To ensure excellent high-quality care is delivered across the team you will be required to work clinical shifts to ensure that you maintain an up to date understanding of Elijah’s day to day care needs.

Elijah requires full assistance with his daily routines and all of his personal care needs. The care aspect of the role will include a mixture of PEG feeding and suctioning, monitoring and recording health status and observations, medication administration, supporting his mobility via hoisting and assisting with all of his therapies.  This job will suit someone who has; experience working in a family home, experience of working with children with complex care needs including epilepsy, PEG feeding, suctioning, manual handling, monitoring and recording observations. Elijah would love someone calm but very proactive and able to bring lots of enthusiasm to the role, able to promote his learning, care and independence in the home and community.

Elijah requires full assistance with his daily routines and all of his personal care needs. The team support our Client with PEG feeding and suctioning, medication administration, supporting his mobility via hoisting and assisting with all of his therapies.  This job will suit someone who is calm but very proactive and able to bring lots of enthusiasm to the role with a general role in promoting the Clients learning, care and independence in the home and community. As a Team Leader Elijah needs someone to advocate for him and his social, emotional, physical and care needs.

About You

Team Leader: Essential
  • Experience of working with children with complex and special needs, with enthusiasm, patience and willingness to learn client specific needs.
  • Experience of formulating appropriate care plans for clients.
  • Experience of formatting rotas.
  • Must be able to work with specialist equipment (training will be provided). A Handling Management Plan is available and is designed to reduce the risk of handling injuries, but you may be required to bend, kneel, squat, push or pull.
  • A good communicator.
  • Experience of and qualifications in caring for children/young people with severe disabilities.
  • Able to practice as a competent support worker and provide evidence to demonstrate this.
  • Able to maintain effective working relationships, including the utilisation of the appropriate person management skills required to lead, train and support a team of support workers.
  • Good written skills, problem solving and the ability to keep adequate written records of care given.
  • Monitoring and management of electronic documentation management system.
  • Understanding of the importance of feedback to qualified members of the team.
  • Confident about working in a client’s own home and sensitive to the needs and wishes of his parents.
  • Happy to learn new things – hoisting, feeding, personal care routine etc. Training will be given.

Team Leader: Desirable
  • Experience of carrying out therapy programmes.
  • Ability to work additional hours as required.
  • Able to work flexible hours, sometimes at short notice.
  • Previous experience of using specialist equipment with disabled people.
  • Experience of writing risk assessments and care plans.
  • Previous experience of hoisting and use of specialist equipment.
  • Experience of carrying out therapy and/or multi-sensory programmes.
  • Experience of using switches and other specialist IT technology for severely disabled people.
  • Water confident
  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of and experience in using signing as a form of communication (Makaton, Signalong, British Sign Language).
