About The Role

Location: Wokingham, Berkshire

Hours: Typical Bank hours will be: one Saturday a month for 5 hours,10am-3pm and cover for absences of the current cycling team who cycle with David on a Tuesday and Thursday.  

Pay

  • £17.85 per hour – Weekdays

Job Summary

David was born in 1973 and lives with his family, who are very important to him. He enjoys family outings, spending time with his children, being outdoors, riding his recumbent bike, playing golf and cooking. He is kind-natured and good company, but benefits from being notified of changes in plans well in advance. He also requires support to monitor his fatigue levels.

David was involved in a car accident and suffered a stroke. Prior to this, he led a very active life. He is now looking for a Buddy/Support Worker to assist with leisure activities, accessing the community (particularly cycling, golf and the gym) and supporting him with his therapy programmes.

He is seeking someone who is:

  • Patient

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supporting David in engaging in leisure activities
  • Accompanying and participating in outdoor activities such as golf, cycling and gym sessions
  • Cycling sometimes up to 50km in a day - please note an electric bike would be advantageous for the role
  • Supporting him directly during cycling activities when required
  • Providing support with therapy and exercise programmes
  • Helping him access the community safely and confidently
  • Monitoring and helping him manage fatigue

It would be great to receive your application, if you have the following skills/behaviours:

Essential

  • Must be able to work with specialist equipment (training will be provided). A Handling Management Plan is available and is designed to reduce the risk of handling injuries, but you may be required to bend, kneel, squat, push or pull
  • Experience or understanding of working with adults with cognitive and physical disabilities (full training can be provided)
  • Confident about working in David’s own home and sensitive to the needs and wishes of his wife and family and able to demonstrate a good understanding of the importance of maintaining confidentiality and respecting their need for privacy.
  • Ability to confidently cycle distances of around 50km per day.
  • Experience supporting or accompanying another individual while cycling, ensuring safety, pacing and practical support throughout the ride.
  • Shares similar interests with David, such as cycling, golf, going to the gym and other outdoor sporting activities which you will participate in for the role. Please note an electric bike is required for the role.
  • Proactive, encouraging approach and able to use own initiative.
  • Responsible attitude with a good sense of humour.
  • Reliable, trustworthy and a good communicator.
  • The ability to learn new skills in accordance with David's programme.
  • Confident with using I.T
  • Water confident.
  • Basic understanding of the principles of rehabilitation.
  • Proactive approach to developing an appropriate range of activities.
  • Flexible with start and finish times according to the needs of our client.
  • Able to work flexible hours, sometimes at short notice.
  • Excellent literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Willing to travel.
  • Comfortable to be around pets - the family have rabbits and guinea pigs.
  • Full driving license and able to drive David's automatic vehicle, endorsements to be disclosed.
  • Non-smoker - this post operates a non-smoking environment.
Desirable
  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent.
  • Experience working with stroke survivors (preferred but not essential; enthusiasm and willingness to learn are key)
  • Experience of carrying out therapy programmes.
  • Previous experience of using specialist equipment with disabled people
  • Basic knowledge of therapies, such as cycling
  • Knowledge and experience of traumatic brain injury would be advantageous.
  • Own car – desirable

About Us

ILS provide Case Management and Rehabilitation Services on a nationwide scale.
 
When a persons life has been changed by injury, we address the practicalities.  We work with children and adults who have had moderate or catastrophic, complex injuries.  We assess individual needs and are able to provide a comprehensive Case Management and Rehabilitation Service designed to maximise independence.
 
ILS recruit on behalf of their clients and therefore, if you are successfully recruited, you will be employed directly by our client or their Deputy appointed by the Court of Protection.  However, ILS will manage your day to day employment, providing you with the support you need to carry out your role.  Working as a Carer or Support Worker for an ILS client means that you will have a dedicated Case Manager to oversee your client's care needs.
