About The Role

Location: Devizes

Hours: 36.75 hours per week, sleeping night shifts on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday 7.15pm - 7.30am

Pay:

  • Weekday sleeping nights: £National Living Wage per hour
  • Weekend/Bank Holiday Sleeping nights: £National Living Wage +£1 per hour 
There may also bank shifts available and these are the pay rates:
  • £16.70 per hour - Monday - Friday, Daytime and Waking Nights
  • £17.81 per hour - Weekends and Bank Holidays, Daytime and Waking Nights

Driving:

  • Driver required: Essential due to remote location of the family home.
  • Vehicle use: You'll also drive the wheelchair adapted automatic vehicle during shifts.

Pets: None, however, Douglas loves interacting with animals.

Job Summary
Douglas born in 1948, has a caring nature and loves interacting with animals.  He loves his food and will have pudding 3 times a week.  His favourite TV programme is Bargain Hunt.  Structure is very important to him and likes to know what is happening and when.

We are looking for dynamic and motivated Support Workers to join an established team providing 24-hour support to Douglas who lives in his own home with his wife. Douglas sustained a traumatic brain injury in 2008 and as a result has physical, cognitive and communication difficulties, he can get very tired and will need to rest frequently and likes to have his blanket on his knee. Douglas has his food pureed at regular times due to risk of choking.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Aiding and supporting Douglas in all aspects of care and daily living activities.
  • Follow therapy recommendations designed by his treating therapists.
  • ‘Douglas’ related domestic chores, such as making sure equipment is clean and tidy, processing his washing
  • Work cooperatively with Douglas’ wife, the Team Leader, Case Manager and team of therapists.

  • A Handling Management Plan designed to reduce the risk of handling injuries may require you to bend, kneel, squat or lunge to ensure good posture during handling tasks.
  • Confident about working in Douglas' own home and sensitive to the needs and wishes of the family.

  • Full driving licence essential and access to own car, as well as driving Douglas in his adapted vehicle.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with adults with special needs (This is preferred but enthusiasm, patience and willingness to learn is desirable).
  • Experience of carrying out therapy programmes.
  • Ability to work additional hours as required sometimes at short notice.
  • Previous experience of using specialist equipment with disabled people.
  • Basic knowledge of therapies.
  • Previous experience of hoisting.
  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent.
  • Knowledge and experience of traumatic brain injury would be advantageous.
  • Basic understanding of the principles of rehabilitation.
