About The Role

Location: Newport, Wales (Rehabilitation Unit)/Cwmbran, Torfaen, Wales (Carl’s home)
Days & Hours: Up to 36.75 hours per week to be worked as a mixture of Day & Night shifts (sleep-ins and waking nights), full time and part time hours available. Shifts are 8.00am to 8.15pm and 8.00pm to 8.15am

Pay: Weekdays: £11.00 per hour / Weekends and Bank Holidays: £12.00 per hour / Sleeping Nights: £National Living Wage per hour (currently £8.21 per hour for workers age 25 and above)

Driver required? Essential

Driving Clients Car? Yes, our client’s Wheelchair Adapted Vehicle (WAV), semi-automatic – need to be 25 or over for insurance purposes
Using Own Vehicle for work purposes? Desirable, to be on duty and to attend training 

Essential: Supporting adults with complex needs, with all elements of daily living including personal care.
Desirable: Experience working with adults with trauma and an interest in therapy

Family Pets: 2 dogs

Accommodation (while on duty): Good sized double bedroom with sitting room, small kitchen and bathroom. 

Interviews Week Commencing: 4th or 11th December 2019

Start Date: ASAP (subject to satisfactory employment checks)

Carl aged 73, is a cheerful gentleman with a great sense of humour.  Carl enjoys spending time with others including his family who are very loving and involved in his life. Carl enjoys the outdoors, wildlife, motorsports and slapstick humour. Carl has an acquired brain injury as a result of a road traffic accident in 2014, which has affected his mobility, communication and cognition. Carl uses a wheelchair and is unable to communicate verbally and relies on others to interpret his body language and facial expressions to identify and address his needs. Carl is currently receiving care in a rehabilitation unit where he has been living for the last few years, he is due to move to a purpose-built property in the coming weeks. Carl’s family and current support team are working towards a move that will enable him to have his own home and family around him.

Pay and Benefits:

£11-12 per hour, Monday to Sunday. Sleeping nights paid at £National Living Wage (currently £8.21 per hour for workers age 25 and above)

On-going training & support provided

5.6 weeks annual leave pro rata

Sick leave entitlement

Free DBS check.

 

In order to promote continuity of our high care standards, you will be offered:

  • On-going support from a dedicated Case Manager and HR department
About You

It would be great to receive your application, if you have the following skills/behaviours:

  • Must be able to work with specialist equipment (training will be provided). A Handling Management Plan is available and is designed to reduce the risk of handling injuries, but you may be required to bend, kneel, squat, push or pull.
  • Experience with working with Acquired Brain Injury
  • Confident and comfortable working in Carl’s own home and sensitive to the needs and wishes of him and his family
  • Can demonstrate commitment and passion for meeting Carl's needs
  • Can demonstrate empathy and understanding in an appropriate and professional manner
  • A team player who understands the importance of feedback to qualified members of the team
  • Can develop productive and professional relationships with others
  • Actively creates an inclusive environment respecting diversity
  • Good organisational skills who can adhere to standards and quality requirements
  • Friendly, approachable with a proactive and encouraging approach
  • Experience with PEG and oral feeding   
  • Punctual, patient, reliable and trustworthy
  • Can maintain an excellent level of confidentiality
  • Good verbal & written communication skills and IT literate
  • Able to think creatively and to use initiative
  • Willingness to work flexibly and cover shifts, sometimes at short notice
  • A full driving licence (endorsements to be disclosed) - must be over 25 for insurance purposes

Satisfactory references & proof of eligibility to work in the UK required.

This position requires a disclosure request from the DBS. A conviction will not necessarily prevent you from being employed.

ILS recruit on behalf of their clients and therefore, if you are successfully recruited, you will be employed directly by our client or their Deputy appointed by the Court of Protection.  However, ILS will manage your day to day employment, providing you with the support you need to carry out your role.  Working as a Carer or Support Worker for an ILS client means that you will have a dedicated Case Manager to oversee your client's care needs.
