About The Role

Location: CB3, Cambridge

Pay: £13 per hour, Days and £15 per hour, Waking Nights

The Full-Time post will initially be for 2-3 months, and may be extended due to the current Covid-19 circumstances. Part-Time posts will be permanent or fixed term. 

School Holidays and during Covid-19 situation where schools are closed: To cover day shifts from 9:30am - 9.30pm on weekdays and weekends and 9:30pm - 9:30am (waking nights) on weekdays.
Term Time: To cover afternoon shifts from 2.30pm - 9.30pm on weekdays, day shifts from 9:30am - 9.30pm at weekends and night shifts from 9:30pm - 9:30am (waking nights) on Weekdays. 

Bank Hours: ad hoc and variable hours covering shifts above to meet the Damian’s needs.

Essential Experience: Confident about working in Damian's own home and sensitive to his needs and wishes and those of his family. Aptitude and desire to work with children/young adults with disabilities.

Desirable: Experience of and qualifications in caring for children with disabilities and ability to work flexible hours as required. Experience of PEG feeding and administration of medication.

Accommodation (while on duty): Fully adapted family home with carer accommodation.

Interview Date: As and when applications are received.

Start Date: ASAP (subject to satisfactory employment checks).


Damian aged 14 is a delightful young man, who is extremely close to his parents and two younger siblings.  He enjoys playing on his iPad and watching TV and laughs out loud at things that make him jump!


Damian likes good consistent routines and care being provided by those that clearly understand his needs.  He has Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy which affects all four limbs.  He uses an eye gaze equipment to assist him with electronic games. Damian has non-verbal communication and uses smiles and expression to communicate his feelings. He requires two to one care day and night.  Damian has his meals and medication via gastrostomy, his diet is very important so set recipes with calorific values are all calculated.

As his Support Worker, you will respond sensitively and appropriately to his needs and emotions. You will be required to work co-cooperatively with his Mother, Team Leader and Case Manager.  Ideally you will have experience in behaviour and seizure management along with PEG feeding and administration of medication. This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated person to join Damian's established care team on a full time fixed term contract (which may be extended), part time or bank basis.


Pay and Benefits:

£13 per hour, days and £15 per hour, waking nights.

On-going training & support provided

5.6 weeks annual leave pro rata

Free DBS check.

  • Aptitude and desire to work with young adults with complex needs.
  • Happy to learn new things in accordance with Damian's programme.
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of confidentiality and privacy.
  • Excellent communication and social skills.
  • Excellent planning skills and ability to ‘risk assess’ activities.
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Confident using I.T. to support Damian.
  • Able to use own initiative and be creative.
  • Can demonstrate commitment and passion for meeting Damian needs.  
  • Can demonstrate empathy and understanding in an appropriate and professional manner.
  • A team player who understands the importance of feedback to qualified members of the team.

  • Ability to work additional hours as required.
  • Full driving licence (endorsements to be disclosed) and able to drive Damian's adapted vehicle    
  • Non-smoker, this post operates in a non-smoking environment.
  • Experience of and qualifications in caring for children/adults with special needs (This is preferred but enthusiasm, patience and willingness to learn is desirable).
  • Experience of and qualifications in caring for children/young people with severe disabilities.
  • Experience of PEG feeding and administration of medication, training will be provided.
  • Experience of carrying out therapy programmes.
  • Ability to work additional hours as required, sometimes at short notice.
  • Experience of writing risk assessments and care plans.
  • Previous experience of hoisting and use of specialist equipment.
  • Experience of carrying out physiotherapy and/or multi-sensory programmes.
  • Experience of using switches and other specialist IT technology for severely disabled people.
  • NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent or working towards a qualification.
  • Own car – desirable to travel to and from work.
Satisfactory references & proof of eligibility to work in the UK required.

This position requires a disclosure request from the DBS. A conviction will not necessarily prevent you from being employed.

When a persons life has been changed by injury, we address the practicalities.  We work with children and adults who have had moderate or catastrophic, complex injuries.  We assess individual needs and are able to provide a comprehensive Case Management and Rehabilitation Service designed to maximise independence.
ILS recruit on behalf of their clients and therefore, if you are successfully recruited, you will be employed directly by our client or their Deputy appointed by the Court of Protection.  However, ILS will manage your day to day employment, providing you with the support you need to carry out your role.  Working as a Carer or Support Worker for an ILS client means that you will have a dedicated Case Manager to oversee your client's care needs.
