About The Role
Location: Stroud, Gloucestershire
Days & Hours:
An average of 23.35 hours per week to be worked as follows: 27 hours during term time and 12 hours during holiday time.
 
Term Time hours to be worked as follows,  15 hours to be typically worked 3.30pm - 8.30pm on a Monday, Wednesday & Friday and a 12 hour shift at the weekend. (27 hours in total)
School holiday hours to be worked in accordance of the rota. (12 hours in total) 
Pay£12.00 per hour, Monday - Friday & £14.00 Weekends and Bank Holidays
Additional hours may be available to cover for absence of other team members. These hours could be shared between 2 or more applicants.
 
Driver required: Yes, as you will be required to drive the client's car as well as your own for work purposes
Essential:
Previous experience of support young people with special needs, though demonstration of a willingness to learn and good communication skills considered. Flexible i.e. with start and finish times according to the needs of Ella and her family 
Desirable:
Ability to work additional hours as required

Ella, is a happy, sociable, young lady aged 19, she lives at home with her parents, two younger brothers and a Labrador dog, so it's important that you are happy to work around dogs. Ella is a very sociable young lady and enjoys the company of her family and friends, she attends a local special needs school and really enjoys after school activities such as hydrotherapy, massage and yoga, so you will need to be sociable and adaptable to help her enjoy all these and be prepared to be busy!

Ella has Cerebral Palsy affecting her whole body, and she is seeking a Support Worker to join her current team to assist her (and her parents) with all aspects of her care and to support her and her family with everyday life both at home and when she is out and about.
 
Ella's Support Worker will need to help her with her communication difficulties, assisting her to use her communication aids, promoting her well being and her independence under the guidance of her parents and professionals who will provide advice and recommendations i.e. on positioning, feeding, exercises, etc. which needs to be followed. 

Pay and Benefits:
£12.00 per hour, Monday - Friday & £14.00 Weekends and Bank Holidays
On-going training & support provided
5.6 weeks annual leave pro rata
Free DBS check

About You

  • * Female - due to providing personal care.
  • Must be able to work with specialist equipment (training will be provided). A Handling Management Plan is available and is designed to reduce the risk of handling injuries, but you may be required to bend, kneel, squat, push or pull.
  • Confident about working in Ella's own home and sensitive to the needs and wishes of her and her parents. 
  • Confident in supporting Ella in accessing the wider community.
  • Previous experience of support young people with special needs, or a willingness to learn.
  • Aptitude and desire to work with young adults with complex needs.
  • Happy to learn new things in accordance with Ella’s programme.
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of confidentiality and privacy.
  • Excellent communication and social skills.
  • Excellent planning skills and ability to ‘risk assess’ activities.
  • Excellent literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Confident using I.T. to support Ella.
  • Able to use own initiative and be creative.
  • Can demonstrate commitment and passion for meeting Ella's needs.  
  • Can demonstrate empathy and understanding in an appropriate and professional manner.

  • Full driving license (endorsements to be disclosed) and able to drive the client's adapted vehicle
  • Non-smoker, this post operates in a non-smoking environment.
Desirable:
  • Experience of and qualifications in caring for children/adults with special needs (This is preferred but enthusiasm, patience and willingness to learn is desirable).
  • Experience of and qualifications in caring for children/young people with severe disabilities.
  • Experience of carrying out therapy programmes.
  • Ability to work additional hours as required, sometimes at short notice.
  • Basic knowledge of therapies, such as hydrotherapy and conductive education.
  • Previous experience of hoisting and use of specialist equipment.
  • Experience of carrying out physiotherapy and/or multi-sensory programmes.
  • Experience of using switches and other specialist IT technology for severely disabled people.
  • NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent or working towards a qualification.
  • Own car – desirable.
  • An interest in art/crafts, music and dogs.
